My Story…
I am walking in the Miles for Migraine walk to help support and bring awareness to Migraine disease. This event raises money for this severely under-funded disease so that it can help with migraine research, education, support groups and finding a cure.
Here are some unfortunate facts about migraines:
- Over 50 million Americans suffer from migraines yet there are fewer than 700 certified headache specialists in the U.S. and 6 states have no headache specialists.
- Less than 5% of people with migraines are able to consult with a headache specialist.
- >50% of migraineurs are not diagnosed. This disease commonly remains misunderstood and is frequently misdiagnosed as sinus or tension headaches.
- Only 12% of those with migraines get preventive migraine treatment.
- Chronic migraineurs who also suffer with depression or anxiety are 300% more likely to try to commit suicide.
In recent years I have been fortunate enough to be prescribed one of the new CGRP migraine preventatives. This medication has greatly improved my quality of life. Additional migraine medications and medical devises are on the horizon. But not all treatments are effective for everyone. Millions of migraineurs are still suffering daily. Much more work is needed to improve their lives and find a cure.
Please consider supporting my efforts of Migraine Awareness or make a donation to Miles for Migraine. No amount is too small. I am motivated to help those suffering with this debilitating disease.
